The Learning Village offers a kindergarten program in Vista. At the present time there is no Kindergarten program for our Tustin school. Our kindergarten provides a well-rounded balance of activities designed to prepare children for first grade. Art, music, socialization, physical education, reading, arithmetic, and science are an integral part of the program. We use the same academic curriculum and learning expectancies as the Vista Unified School District. In addition, there are learning activities and experiences of our own design. Our teacher to student ratio is about 1 to 12 with a teacher's aide during certain activities. Our small class size will enable children to receive the individualized attention they need. Extended day care is available from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Vista.
KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM
We use the "Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easly Lessons" series as our basic reading curriculum. Encoding, decoding, and sight reading skills are also taught. "Teach Your Child To Read" is a version of SRA's "Reading Mastery Series" which has a strong emphasis on phonics and a somewhat better approach to teaching children how to sound out words and blend sounds together. The program teaches the reading skills children will need for first grade. We combine that curriculum with "Bobs Books". The "Bobs Book" are a number of story books that accompany the program. There is also an emphasis on writing sounds, letters and words as they are taught. We also focus on teaching Language. Language arts including vocabulary development, rhymes, songs, and self-expression are emphasized in our program.
"Mathematics Their Way" is a proven text which has hundreds of "hands on" activities to teach patterning, counting, addition, subtraction, sorting, comparing, graphing, and so on. It comes with manipulatives which includes unifix cubes, rings, shapes, beads, blocks, geoboards, and more. The manipulative make the math activities fun and concrete for the young child. A math workbook is also completed to further reinforce concepts and teach number formation.
Science, music, and art are an integral part of the program. Creativity, self-expression, and knowledge of the world are fostered by these activities. These activities are coordinated to reinforce concepts being taught in the classroom.
THE KINDGARTEN SCHEDULE
In general, the school year follows the public school calendar with the following exception: when the public school district is closed for vacation The Learning Village is often open. Children in our kindergarten receive more academic school days than children in public school. The children in our kindergarten do have a non-academic or holiday schedule of activities during Christmas & Spring break.
The kindergarten day is 8:45 am. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Part-time kindergarten is not available, i.e., you must enroll for the full five day program. The monthly tuition is the same as the regular preschool program except there is a $75 materials fee. This fee covers books, materials, insurance, and registration. It is paid in advance when you enroll your child for kindergarten and will reserve the space for your child. It is non-refundable.
FUN
The emphasis of the kindergarten program will not be all academics. Our goal is to have a variety of interesting activities for the children. Structure is important but so are choices, self-initiation, creativity and fun. Several field trips, special events and classroom parties are also planned.
